Some Facts about Hearing and Why We Do What We Do.

The Rotary Club of Vancouver hosts this annual fund raising event in support of the hearing impaired in British Columbia . Our Bike-A-Thon is celebrating its 26th Anniversary in July and in its 26 year history has raised over $2 million for the Rotary Hearing Foundation, a registered charitable society.

These funds have been used to support cochlear implant research at UBC, to establish the Rotary Hearing Centre at UBC and the Rotary Hearing Clinic at St. Paul ’s Hospital, and to support the Vancouver Community College Adult Education Programs for the deaf and hard of hearing.

The Rotary Hearing Foundation is currently in discussions with the Providence Health Care Centre to ascertain whether it is feasible to establish a Rotary Hearing Centre in their new facility.

We would like to invite you to be a part of this exciting program by participating in Bike-A-Thon 2010 which will be held on Sunday, July 11th, 2010. The ride begins at 6am from Brentwood Mall and follows the Loughheed Highway to Harrison Hot Springs Hotel, 120km away. Each year over 140 riders raise pledges in support of RHF and make the trek to Harrison .  Last year alone we raised over $165,000.

There are many ways you can participate:

  • Make a Corporate donation
  • Raise $300 in pledges or more and ride the 120km yourself.
  • Form a “Challenge Team” of riders from your Company and compete for the Team Cup which is presented to the Team raising the most in donations or pledges.
  • Form a “Partnership Relay” with a spouse, friend and/or relatives each to ride a portion of the distance with each member raising $300 or more.
  • Make a pledge to a Rider or contribute directly to the Rotary Hearing Foundation. Tax receipts are issued for pledges and donations over $20.
  • Donate a Prize for the Celebration Banquet.

For more information, call Pam at our office - 604-685-0481.

Bike-A-Thon 2009 was a roaring success and we had 10 year old Janelle Milne bring us up to date on her cochlear implant story.  Some of you will remember the video we saw in 2001 when Janelle first received her implant.  If you would like to see that video again or for the first time, click here to see Janelle on YouTube. >

The Rotary Bike-A-Thon Committee visited the Cochlear Implant Services at B.C. Children’s Hospital on April 22, 2009. Click here to read about BC Children's Hospital's Early Hearing Screening Program and the advances in Cochlear Implant Technology.
